Evan and Holly’s Dad’s Blog

Hi and welcome to my blog. Filled with images from my recent weddings, engagement shoots, portrait sessions and corporate work. Most importantly its a window into my world...a world where family takes an upper hand and I have the images to prove it. Hopefully you'll take a few minutes to browse and once addicted set the blog as a bookmark. If you have any comments please feel free to add them or just get in touch.

For The Record: The images that I put on the blog from recent weddings may not always be the best or even ones you might expect. They are things that I saw, that I like that I want to share. Sometimes they are part of a quirky story or show a tender or ironic side to a wedding.

Dear Toree and John,

Tell more Toree, why whenever I type your name I want to type 2 Rs.  Just a thought.  Thanks to you both for having Darren and I to your most excellent Pembroke College, Cambridge wedding.  I can now tell folks I ‘went to Cambridge’.  Should I omit the ‘just for a day’ bit.  Reminds me of folks who say they went to Oxford (followed by a long pause) Brookes.  Tangents galore!

It was a military wedding without the guns…or the fancy dress for that matter.  I sometimes wonder why all military weddings don’t wear uniforms.  Then I reflect on how my wife used to go wild when I wore my Pizza Hut delivery outfit back at Uni.  Fair dos…the last thing you want are more women falling over themselves for you on your wedding day.

Speaking of falling over things on your wedding day…how about the things I fell for on your wedding day.  I loved that Tor(r)ee’s mum, knowing that she was getting ready in a holiday flat, felt compelled to bring along photos of the family from home to make it feel more personal.  I loved how one Bridesmaid flew in from Africa whilst another one was frantically trying to find flats in Boston (USA).  I loved that even though the venue weren’t keen on assembling the cake Toree’s Dad took a crash course in cake tier creation.  I LOVED the church.  I don’t think I’ve ever shot a wedding in a church where the light was better.  I think I remember you guys being concerned.  It was lush (says Nessa).  I loved being allowed to shoot in the church (refreshing) and the aweseome choir.  I loved the parents only receiving line.  Nice touch.  I was amazed to see, entirely through coincidence, a guest from a wedding I did two years ago and there was no single connection between the two (apart from him and I).  I loved the dining hall…amazing to photograph in.  I loved…well…everything.

I know you aren’t off until next week.  I’m working hard to ensure I have something for you before you go.  So I hope you enjoy this wee taster.

BTW…my wife didn’t really like my Pizza Hut delivery uniform.  Creative license.

I selected this one because, by his own admission, John isn’t a fan of the camera. Funny for a chap who has been known to stand in front of Buckingham Palace with a big hat probably having his photo taken all day.

SO…I spent all of yesterday thinking I was in Hertfordshire…in fact, I was in South Cambridgeshire.  Like South Central LA without the guns.

Yesterday had the potential to be the biggest nightmare of my career.  “Harsh” I hear you say.  Well, it had nothing to do with the lovely couple, family, friends or venue.  It all had to do with the blinking M25.  A few weeks ago my good friend, Jim Davidson — the photographer, not the crude stand up comedian — asked if he could come along on a wedding.  I offered some choices and he picked yesterday.  Remember this…its called foreshadowing.  So, 1 hour and 15 minutes earlier than required I set off on my journey to Sandy to photograph the bridal prep.  Then I hit the western stretch of the M25.  Junctions 16 to 19 specifically.  Cue nightmare.  Watching as the time slipped away my pulse began to race.  I’ve never been late for a wedding and I wasn’t planning on starting today.  Sadly its not an area I know well and SatNav’s solution to it was to exit and then rejoin the motorway.  Duh!  I was due to start at 1:30…my ETA was slipping….LOADS.  13:00, 13:02, 13:04, 13:10 etc etc.  By 13:25 and no end in sight for the long queues of traffic it was time to invoke plan B.  Jim, luckily already at the venue, hit the road to be with the girls.  Jim LITERALLY saved the day.  So what started out with a little ‘try something different” for him turned into a normal few hours and a whole lot of saving my bacon.  Things will always happen…I would have thought that the extra time was more than enough for a Wednesday afternoon.  Luckily there was a great photographer and friend there to lend a hand.

If you are looking for a Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire wedding photographer, check out Jim’s wedding photography website.
