Evan and Holly’s Dad’s Blog

Hi and welcome to my blog. Filled with images from my recent weddings, engagement shoots, portrait sessions and corporate work. Most importantly its a window into my world...a world where family takes an upper hand and I have the images to prove it. Hopefully you'll take a few minutes to browse and once addicted set the blog as a bookmark. If you have any comments please feel free to add them or just get in touch.

For The Record: The images that I put on the blog from recent weddings may not always be the best or even ones you might expect. They are things that I saw, that I like that I want to share. Sometimes they are part of a quirky story or show a tender or ironic side to a wedding.

But you can call him Welly.  Honestly.  I have the place name to prove it.

On Saturday I ventured to Guildford for the last wedding of 2010.  Its one I had been looking forward to shooting ever since Vicky and Welly booked me back at the Loseley House open day in February.  I had been to Loseley once before, back in the summer of 2009.  I was keen to see how a December wedding played out.  I wasn’t disappointed.  A grand Christmas tree in the hall made for a warm holiday feeling.  Baubles the size of oranges and guests all in black tie contributed to a special occasion.  It was like the 10 hours of Christmas minus the 5 golden eggs.

Whilst Darren was following Pinky (sorry, I mean Welly) around Godalming (apparently stopping off at Costa — boys do such different things hours before a wedding) I was hold up in the top floor of the Mandalay Hotel in central Guildford.  A great starting point for any Guildford area wedding.  I had feared enormous traffic and hordes of Christmas shoppers but thankfully the car park was more than adequate and although a stones throw from town my fears were never realised.

Loseley House’s ceremony room is second to none.  Not knowing much about English periods and architecture I can’t say what it is apart from being ‘well cool’ (ala Ali G).  Afterwards we all moved to the Tithe Barn where the reception and wedding breakfast takes place.  I know my barns.  I felt right at home.  Throw in some free flowing champagne and wonderful meal (venison sausages and mash), thoughtful speeches, an excellent band and a fabulous couple (with great guests too) and you’ve got a great night.

Saturday closed the year known as 2010 out in glorious fashion.  A lovely couple, great friends and a fantastic venue.  What a way to finish the year.

More from Vicky and Wellington’s wedding tomorrow.  But for now, enjoy a Just One.

This was my first visit to Loseley House.  A bit of a baptism by fire (or perhaps rain).  Just as I arrived at the venue from the bridal prep the heavens opened and hail stones crashed down.  For about 2 hours it was an interesting affair.  Thankfully Sophie, Simon nor the guests let it hamper their day and before long the skies were blue and clouds puffy white.  Its the kind of day that challenges a photographer most…going from pouring rain and darkness to blasting sunshine and contrasty shadows.  Hope you like what you see.

There is something raw about this photo that I just love.  I can’t really explain it…but it gets right into me.

I suspect there are going to be many camps who would think a) Why would anyone take this picture and b) for the love of God man…why would you put it on the blog.  If you know me you’ll know I’ll quite happily wax lyrical about a lot things…and yes, you’re going to get the reason why.   For me, I believe that I have different hats that I have to wear.  One of those hats is setting a context.  Its the reason I took a photo of Simon in the lobby of the hotel chatting to guests but focused on the Swine Flu advice sign…no, I didn’t blog it, I felt one ‘stretching’ image a wedding is probably enough.  It may, or may not be relevant that their wedding took place in the summer of Swine Flu.  Equally important are the items on the desk above.  Their collective message, not one of a close up, but rather as a perspective tell us a few things.  First, there’s rescue remedy.  A holistic stress ‘aid’.  Next is Night Nurse.  Was the Bride ill…no, but she couldn’t sleep and for the recond the Night Nurse did nothing to help.  Last is the Cow and Gate follow on milk…their son, Milo, is a just a wee nipper but all part of the wedding.  So…no, this ain’t gonna win an award or make others go “cracking job mate” but they (the couple) might see it…in a year or 5 or 10 years and if it brings those on the day feelings back then I’ve done my job…even if I didn’t worship the gods of great photography.
