You know, when you stare at the word ‘extravaganza’ long enough you become convinced it was only invented by someone playing Scrabble with an exceedingly naive opponent. Nevermind about that, but do mind about popping over to The Bary at Bury Court (or as I like to call it Bury Court Barn) on Sunday March 21 between the hours of 11am and 4pm. In their words it will have “an excellent selection of exhibitors covering a wide range of professional wedding services”. I start to twitch at being referred to as professional….but then I suppose, if the shoe fits.

I’ll be there (and Nicola too)….so come on down (Price is Right stylee) and let’s talk shop.

There’s no question I love being busy. Especially in the winter months. With 5 weddings between the 18th of December and the 9th of January I knew things were always going to be hectic. Christmas, New Year, travel to York — twice in 5 days. What I didn’t expect was 2 cases of Chickenpox and 4 days off of school. All in all it put everything behind…a lot. Thankfully everyone has been more than understanding…clients, family…everyone. For that I am grateful. Earlier this week I posted a new slideshow on the website. Here’s a link:

Help Wanted: Red Nosed specialist need only apply. Seemed like a good idea on Thursday night when the snow started to fall. By Friday morning we were in a winter wonderland. Time to change the plans a bit and collect Darren a wee bit early. Funny thing was, it was far more dicey this side of the county than in Wonersh where Tor’s parents live and where the church is. It was funny being back in Wonersh. Nicola and I had our wedding reception in The Grantley Arms 14 years ago…the same pub that Duncan and many of the guests met at before the ceremony.

Bury Court was lovely — as usual. Such a warm and inviting space. Of course the gigantic overhead gas heaters probably have something to do with that. Below are some faves…some interesting bits and some random hoo-hah.

It was great to get back to Bury Court Barn. Since I was last there the leaves have started to turn and there’s a bit of a chill in the air. But this and the wet weather did little to dampen the spirits of the family and friends of Gee and Jon. I was happy to be back…and speaking of being back its all a little weird. A year ago I shot a wedding at Bury Court Barn. The church was in Rowledge and the prep was at Groomes. A year later I return for a wedding at Bury Court Barn, a ceremony at the same church in Rowledge and prep at Groomes. Georgina’s surname is Howard. I also shot a wedding of a Georgina and Howard at Bury Court Barn last December. These coincidences…can they be dismissed? Who knows.

Whilst we’re talking about suppliers…you must know that Groomes is one of the finest country houses around. Great location and wonderful people!

Its been a few weeks since my last Just One. I can’t always post one due to timings. In this one…well, I like this one because, to be honest, I didn’t get it quite right. I overexposed the image after I moved positions and something happened in front of my I couldn’t miss. But, as these thing often happen, the ‘messed up’ image produces wicked results. So here’s Georgina (aka G) putting on her earrings. BTW, the circles of confusion on the left is actually my wild haired videographer friend Leo Ferenc from Perfect Day Studios.

Back to The Barn at Bury Court (or is that Bury Court Barn…I can never remember) on Saturday. It was about 4 weeks since I’d been there. Not much had changed…it still one of the best venues in Surrey…scrap that, perhaps in the country. Of course I might be a little biased (close to home, on the recommended suppliers list and have a great working relationship with the folks there). As usual the barn was in top condition which meant that everyone could simply get on with having a great wedding. Luckily Mike turned out in his 5 o’clock shadow. Apparently this a plus point in his house…I simply get moaned at. Oh how the other half live. Thanks to Kaite and Mike as well as their guests for making us feel welcome.

On the list of shots that get you killed as a wedding photographer…this ranks quite high

The one thing about when Darren and I work together is that Darren and I work magnificently together. We rarely ever turn up in each other’s shot and never get in each others way. I suspect those few times I took a ruler to his forehand really did the trick (only joking…geez people). But as I watched Nicky from Jacaranda close the curtains I knew I had a chance for a great framed shot. The curtains slowly started to close and just as they got to the A+ spot some knucklehead walked in front of me. OK…as you can see it would have been a waste anyhow as Mike’s eyes were closed and a split second later I did get another shot. I just thought it was highly amusing — and you…well, you’re bored to tears.

Now a Few From Darren

Speaking of the peeing and the Apprentice (and most notably James from the Apprentice) I was struck by a comment that probably helped James get dumped from the show. In the question “what can you bring to Sir Alan’s company” James answered, “ignorance”. Of course this got old Clive the interviewer’s jerk juices flowing and he ridiculed him senseless. But I do appreciate what James was trying to say. Wisdom is something that is valuable but at the same time crippling. It can stop you from taking a risk or chancing a situation which, if it comes off, will make you seem as if you’re a magician of sorts. Darren is my ignorance (yes, that is a compliment). He tries things without the fear of failure or the wisdom to know if it will work. I see so much of myself in Darren that its quite scary. In that, I try to always remember that ignorance as a way to stay fresh. For that I hope I he stays ignorant for a long time to come.
