Family Friday – Holly Yet Again

Seriously…Evan is so getting the shaft lately. But ever since the UK Child Photographer of the Millenium, Helen Bartlett, came round to do a day with the family Holly has been really into having her photo taken. Good thing too. Evan just puts on the most obnoxious grin. His time will come! Tuesday night, after bath, Evan gets into his dressing gown. Holly, in typical fashion, has to do the same. I hadn’t actually seen it as its new. I never ran so fast down the stair. She was (is) adorable…despite being the spawn of the devil only the next day. Rough/smooth and all that.

Family Photography in Liss and Petersfield

A few weeks ago I took a local family to a nearby location for a family photography session. The session came as a result of a silent auction at the Liss Infant School Christmas fair. No pressure then considering I see them in playground on my school run days. Yikes. I don’t have buckets to say or even any quirky comments. Just a few nice photos of a family…well, I think they are nice :)

Meet Joshua…aka Joshi. Or maybe that’s with a ‘y’…I can never tell. He’s a wee thing who belongs to some of my most dedicated clients, Laura and Leigh. These guys are responsible for a number of weddings .. well perhaps not the weddings themselves but the fact that I was at them. They’ve taken me from Surrey to West Wales .. twice! Plus a few other locations and another one to come this September. I’m delighted to call them clients and friends. They are also ace at the best places to eat and drink in Brighton. Last week they popped in for a quick session around the house…amazing what you can do with small children in a small space. Here are a few of my favourites.

Sex and the City – A Ladies Photoshoot Around London

After spending something like 12 years in London it was time for one of the Aussie lasses to make their way back down under. During that time Nina had made some wonderful friendships and this gave them a idea. What better way to always remember the amazing London years than to get together for a Sex and the City style photoshoot. A lifelong keepsake of their town and their friendship. So, last Friday I hustled to London to do that…no, not wear a skirt and take part but rather take things in from the other side of the lens.

Throughout our multi location shoot I often found myself trailing behind the fabulous 4 as they strode through the masses on the South Bank and St Pauls. It was most interesting watching the eyes of the blokes walking the other way. What a great job I have. I even noticed the ladies having a look, but to be fair more were drawn to their shoes and each had that ‘ouch’ look on their face. Me…I had sensible footwear.

Here’s a few of some of my favourites from the afternoon. Unfortunately the wind was rather spirited which made things more difficult…but I reckon it all worked out just fine!

I was pleased to get the opportunity to work with some wonderful kids last week. In not being my kids they were actually quite happy to do whatever I asked them to do — suckers. Evan becomes a complete ham when I try to get him to do anything. Silly grins and poking out his tongue is par for the course with him these days. Of course it wasn’t all plain sailing. The youngest took some time to get used to the idea of me being around. I managed to get a few of her — bless. Here are a few of my favourites (and its about time too…apparently the kids are nagging mum to see some photos).

You know how it is…you go out to the woods to shoot some photos (ok, maybe you don’t)…you trundle around in the rain trying to get the best out of the situation that you can. Safe in the knowledge that it wasn’t as bad as it could have been you return home and within a second of walking in the door you realise that the best photos you could take were sitting there, on a platter, in the doorway of your house. Shoot! Literally!

4-8-15-16-23-42 — If you’re wondering where I’ve been I can tell you that I’ve been servicing the computer, entering the numbers religiously every 108 minutes. So you can thank me for still having a civilization in which to speak of. If you don’t buy that (and let’s face it, why would you) then I can say that part of it, at least, is true. I haven’t been anywhere. I’ve been right here the whole time. Its just that I’ve been busy in yet another mid life crisis (albeit a few years too short).

So in a year I’ve gone from a Windows Mobile phone, XP, Vista and Canon to an iPhone, macMini, MacPro and Nikon. Over the past week its all been about moving from PC to Mac. It takes time to move things around, get things sorted…do all those stupid things you’ve been saying you were going to do for ages but never got round to.

If you are a blog stalker…a devoted, religious and emotional attached viewer I can give you some really good news. I have 5 weddings in December and 3 in January. So even in the doldrums of those hard winter days…days that only Jane Austen could write about…there will be fodder for you. My first December wedding is tomorrow…so tune in on Monday.

Saying that, I do have one ickle image. Dumb stuff really…well, its not that the image is dumb just that I had to clean up someone elses mess. A member of our NCT group gets in touch earlier this week. Their son’s first ever school photos have come back and they are…ahem…dreadful. They weren’t pleased (not Liss BTW)..could I do another one for them. Sure…why not…let’s get right down to the lowest common denominator of photography and set up a school photo studio (in the comfort of my own living room). I was quite pleased…dull, boring, lifeless…spot on really. So after he changed I moved the light a bit closer, turned off the bounce light (you know you are in the front room when your second light is bounced) and just tried to capture a bit of ‘whatever’…

The phone rings this morning at 9:30. “Hi Rob, it Phil. Change of plan, we can make it today. Can we come round at 1?”. “Sure”…such is a life of a portrait photographer with foreign clients and weather forecast that could only make a pig happy. So it was the return of Alek, this time with his little sister, Alva. It was four years ago when they first came round I was pleased to see that Alek is a cheeky today as he was back then. Full of smiles and laughter only now with the 6 going on 15 vocabulary. I know, Evan is 4 going on 15. So off we went to the woods near Hill Brow to see what the photo god would dish up for us.

Working with kids…especially small ones is a challenge on time. Get them in a good mood and hope it lasts. There is only so much you can do in a short space of time before the attention and being in the same place takes its toll. But Alva was (is) a sweetie even if she did look at me on more than one occasion with “yeah…whatevah” in her eyes. So she’s 1 going on 15. Go figure!

Band Photography – TAFKA 24 Hour Affair

The Artists Formerly Known As (TAFKA) “24 Hour Affair” came out last night for a little fun band photography. Its not something I’ve ever really done so I was keen to give it a go. You might wonder how a band (now called “Workhorse”) 20 somethings might find a primarily wedding photographer to shoot some promo shots. Then again…some of you who are long time blog followers might recognise one member of the band. Our very own Darren plays bass. I pieced a few together quickly. If you’re in, or know of a band who might be looking for edgy, creative and supernatural band photography, please get in touch.

Children’s Portrait Photography – Central London

I’ve been getting into a bit more portrait photography sessions lately. Its great when clients (and in this case parents) are a bit more insightful into the types of images they would like. For me its a bit of home ground advantage because this is the kind of fun stuff I’ve been doing with Evan for years. Of course, when you roll up and meet kids you’ve never laid eyes on for the first time it helps having a bit of CBBC knowledge to hand. Can you say ice breaker! Fortunately for me these guys were more than willing just to get on with it. I became an expert in Nintendo DS, backyard cricket and learned that photos from beneath the trampoline probably weren’t worth it.

This is why I reckon Evan might be wanting one of these in a few years time
