Gill and Simon – Jewish Wedding in London

Sometimes this job takes you to places you’ve never been. Sometimes you see things you’ve never seen. Sometimes you find yourself in situations you never expected to be in. Last Sunday I found all three. Walking through Spitalfields market on a Sunday at 5 trying desperately to find a toilet…luckily this wouldn’t be the only place I hadn’t been (or perhaps had been…if you see what I mean). Of course the real place I hadn’t been that deserves the kudos is the Sandy’s Row Synagogue. From the outside an unassuming and quite frankly almost miss-able location. Once inside that all changes. Add this to a midnight amble through Petticoat Lane and you’ve covered the places I’d never been. Now to seeing things I’ve never seen. Top of the list would be an entire wedding party, some carrying candle lanterns walking en mass through the streets of E1 from the Synagogue to the restaurant. Being a Jewish wedding you have to add in the clarinetist who ‘serenaded’ us all on our journey. Its days like this you learn to travel light. Finally, being in the situation you never really expected to be in. I suppose the fact that Gill is Claire’s mum would top that list. I photographed Claire and Richard’s wedding a number of years back and now I was back to photograph mum’s wedding. The Circle of Life? Maybe more a trapezoid. Either way I was flattered and grateful to be back amongst familiar faces and even some new ones…thinking specifically of Claire and Richard’s Benji.

With a 6:30 ceremony (yes…that’s PM) and a Sunday night finish I will say that the blog will be a shorter. How could it not? But I think what you find is still a lovely memory of a special evening.

Pre-Wedding Shoot – London – Emma and Effi

So far the rebel youth hasn’t been in contact to ask for image rights. I’m safe…for now. But I do want to share a bit more of the shoot I did with Emma and Effi last week in London. I’m sure we picked the busiest day in history. With the fabulous weather and the fact it was a Friday I’m sure there thousands more people around than normal. Saying that, I reckon it worked just fine…who doesn’t like a challenge? Due to time constaints I’m not going to be making excessive comments today. I’ll be joining Emma and Effi in Tel Aviv for their wedding soon…time for lots of comments then :)

Being near enough to Stansted’s landing pattern meant that Ariella was always captivated

I quickly became captivated by the lights in the lobby…also I learned that the hat/Rabbi thing wasn’t just something I had only seen in the movies

By tradition the Groom comes to meet the Bride to confirm to the Rabbi and a witness that she is, in fact, his bride of choice…this is called Bedecken

Naturally I was captivated by the cultural symbols. I was also given a skull cap to wear. Being the ever astute photographer it only took my about 5 minutes to realise that everyone on the left was wearing one…thats because everyone on the left was a man. It all made sense once the light bulb turned on!

But, no matter what type of service, theres always a receiving line — YAY!

Fortunately, for the boys, all that dancing had made Richard about 4 pounds lighter

On a day when Torro Rosso won their first Grand Prix it was only fitting that Rabbi Davis did a great bull imitation…what you can’t see is the chap holding the serviette awaiting his charge

The entire room — all 178 guests — toasts the bride. No pressure.
