Evan and Holly’s Dad’s Blog

Hi and welcome to my blog. Filled with images from my recent weddings, engagement shoots, portrait sessions and corporate work. Most importantly its a window into my world...a world where family takes an upper hand and I have the images to prove it. Hopefully you'll take a few minutes to browse and once addicted set the blog as a bookmark. If you have any comments please feel free to add them or just get in touch.

For The Record: The images that I put on the blog from recent weddings may not always be the best or even ones you might expect. They are things that I saw, that I like that I want to share. Sometimes they are part of a quirky story or show a tender or ironic side to a wedding.

Ohhh arr.  Time for our yearly trip down to the West Country (is Devon considered the West Country?).  We enjoy going trekking down the A303.  We all stay with friends in Honiton as its a good base for locations down that way.  Devon reminds me of southwest Virginia (not where I’m from, but my parents).  Sudden hills and beautiful farm land.  The pace of life and the things that matter seem slightly different.  There’s something romantic, nostalgic and heart warming about it.  Perhaps the grass is greener (and from all accounts, it was).

Yovana and Dan are a little younger than my average client.  Most of my clients are nearer to 30 (a few years either side).  These guys are both 22.  My wife pointed out to me that she was 22 when we got married.  I couldn’t work out how we’ve been married for 13 years and she still insists she’s in her 20s.  Math was never my forte.  22 or 42…its not matter as these guys seemed well into each other — not that I’ve really ever had any clients who weren’t.

Whilst the wedding was at their local church the location that stuck with me with the Barnstaple Hotel.  A wickely cool (well, for my kind of photography) place that was a little bit kitch — although I’m now informed by Wikipedia that kitch is a derogatory comment meaning inferior or in poor taste.  Let me redifine kitch as having period features which help define an era of flares and disco.  Of course quite a lot of the place was modern but I saw the things in it I wanted to see.  Given the distance, I don’t know if I’ll be back (there are local venues I’ve never seen).  But I hope I do…I woke up the next morning with a few more ideas :)

royle 35 Devon Wedding Photography Yovana and DanFunny…I have the same list at home

royle 34 Devon Wedding Photography Yovana and DanI kind of realised after I did all my selections that there wasn’t much ‘Yovana’ from the blogged preps…its not intentional, I just have a quirky sense of ‘look-see’.  This is, in fact, Yovana…or rather a quarter of Yovana’s face

royle 33 Devon Wedding Photography Yovana and DanTough man…cuddly cup…bless

royle 32 Devon Wedding Photography Yovana and DanOnce I had a client say “there are lots of dark things in your photos”.  I was bemused.  I finally concluded that I do often show ‘darker’ images on the blog.  Mainly because I’m often quite pleased with them because often times they are a record of things that most photographers would have simply said “can’t do that” and walked away.  There are, in fact, plenty of light things in my images as well.  Check out a full gallery sometime to see.

Hank Williams Jr sang all about Family Tradition.  Generally, these are good things.  A few years back in a fit of sponteneity a few of the chaps picked out some table favours with the Bride and Grooms name on them, and with the help of a few glasses of wine etc they decided to leave their mark on the table cameras.  A good laugh was had by all.  More of a ‘concern’ are the events of Saturday.  Knowing that the table decorations had nothing with the B&G’s name on it ‘someone’ had the foresight to bring their own…with double sided tape to boot…3 copies.  Imagine my surprise when asked to come to the toilet with 2 grown men and an 8 year old boy…with my camera.  Duty or simply madness.  You be the judge.

It had been a while since I’d been to Kent.  Quite a long while actually.  Luckily I was spared the M25 traffic and apart from following the post code via SatNav only to learn it took you to entirely the WRONG village the travels were just fine…

I often get clients who are really into photography.  But I knew this one would be different.  He’s a cameraphile and she…well, she just likes pretty pictures.  So finding the balance was always going to be the end goal.  I reckon that we managed it.  After all, for a lot of the day its straight down the line.  I do like to stretch things when I get the chance but not on everything.

Darren (or Dazza as Nicola likes to call him)…well, we did share a moment in the car.  I remembered a touching story (not really that touching) about a trip he made to Newquay where him and his mates played Boston’s ‘More Than a Feeling’ on level 11 for the entire trip.  I love Boston so I downloaded it onto my iPhone, told him to look away as I cue’d it up…something special just for him.  He was well chuffed and said “I should make a tape for you of all the songs I like that I reckon you’ll like”.  Silence fell upon the car.  How exactly do you reply to that.  Like yes, I buy you dinner and yes I’ve even shared a bed in a £9 travelodge when you *coughs* say you forgot your PJs and yes I downloaded ‘More than a Feeling’…but dude…don’t get the wrong idea!  I’m a happily married man…

Before I turn you over to the photos I would like to quickly mention Simone from Dimples Events.  I won’t lie to you…some wedding organisers deserve a padded cell.  Thankfully Simone isn’t one of them.  I really, really enjoyed working with them and they ensured everything ran smoothly.  A bonus for sure!

Picking Just One was difficult (as usual I suppose).  He was into my creative capture and she was just a girl who likes nice piccies.  So here it is…more to follow…ON TUESDAY.  I have  a corporate job on Monday (sorry, Joe, I gave you duff info).  If you are a Monday only visitor do scroll down.  I did a wedding on Thursday at Buxted Park.

I hated this wedding…

No seriously…hated it.  I mean, great light, great couple, great guests, great weather, great location…how the hell does it get any better.  I’ve seen utopia and damnit, I want it back!

Joking aside yesterday, yes…a Thursday, was just wonderful.  Wedding photographers love weekday weddings…and even more so when you get [....] (see the long list of ‘greats’ above).  As an added ‘bonus’ Chrissy and Arnon have asked if I could prepare a few more images to display at their Israeli wedding which takes place next weekend.  As a result I picked out a bit more than usual and found it hard to cull back to the usual 30ish.  I’ll also post a Facebook gallery to see more.  I’m really excited about the images…there is SO much more to come as well!

The Long Journey

Posted by: | Comments (0)

There are times when, no matter how old you are, you just can’t shake that schoolboy mentality.  For instance, last week Nicola officially stopped breastfeeding Holly.  Each stage of her growth brings new excitement and at the same time a few disappointments.  Both Evan and Holly are products of IVF.   Not only expensive, its also draining on your emotions.  So we decided that two was enough.  So each little stage means a little bit further away from things we’ll never, as parents, see again.  Breastfeeding was, I suspect, a firm grasp on Holly’s infant status and when the time came to give it up Nicola was a little bit sad.  With the scene set here’s the screenplay:

Nicola:  “Well that’s it…I’m done.  No more breastfeeding.”

Rob: “You OK with it?  You know that its the best thing for her now.”

Nicola:  “Well…I can’t say that I’m not a bit sad.  I mean, me and my boobs…we’ve been on a long journey together.”

Cue Beavis and Butthead style giggling from yours truly…partly for the many visions of comedy genius going through my mind and partly in anticipation of just what pearl of wisdom was about to pop out of my dear wife’s mouth.

Nicola: “Seriously…it was my boobs that told me I was pregnant with Evan and Holly.  They’ve always been there for me”

Rob:  “Yeah love…whatever!”

I suppose she has a point.  What do I know anyhow?  Not much apparently…of course I’ve still got the last scene of Thelma and Louise in my head.  Take your pick who gets to play Nicola and her…ahem…other halves.

Shame her name wasn’t Lola…I can see it now:

Charlie:  “I have this little Bride Lola…she’s small and very funny”

but then if you don’t have a toddler you probably won’t know what I’m on about — and if you fit that category perhaps you need to visit here.

Anyway…I haven’t been to Cain Manor since November of last year.  Glad to see my Cain Manor weather magic still has so miles left.  I’ve never shot there when its ever rained.  Its a gift you see…and one I reckon other potential clients should recognise.  Its just irresponsible to work with anyone else :)

I always love working there.  Its part of my trio of wicked ceremony light (Hampton Court House, Clandon Park and Cain Manor…suspiciously ALL Surrey wedding venues).  And…we’re off!
